RULE OF THREE

Ever tried to arrange your favourite pieces on a shelf and no matter what angles and arrangements you try, something feels off? When it comes to displaying your accessories unless you have an innate sense of balance – follow the rule of three. The method is simple, arrange items together in threes – it can be three identical elements or three items of varying size and shape, but keep it to three.

HANGING ARTWORK

I tend to see that most people tend to hang artwork or frames too high on the wall. Remember, the idea behind wall hanging is for it to be seen, without being on your tip toes! Placing things too high shifts the focus to the empty space below and the ceiling.
On average, eye level is around 150cm from the floor – that's where your masterpiece should center. Same rule goes for pictures along a staircase; aim for the artwork's center to be 150cm from the top of the step. Use this same guide when you’re hanging pictures along a staircase, 150cm will be the center of the artwork from the top of the step. I promise you, you your art will look so much better at the right height!

LAYERING A COLOUR STORY

If you’re not hiring an interior designer or are working on a budget but want to achieve a refined space a simple tip is through layering in the same colour story. start with varied textures and materials in the same shade. For example, if your couch is beige, add cushions and throws in beige in different patterns and materials. Then take the same approach and add a rug in the same shade. You can add contrast and a focal point through artwork or through sculpture or greenery.

DON’T BE AFRAID OF A BLANK SPACE

To me, there is nothing more beautiful than contrast in design and aesthetics. Even in maximalist design, there is always room for blank space. This often draws attention to the pieces or design choices you love the most. So, when you are building the design for your room or space, allow for some blank room, spend some time within it before deciding if it really needs to be filled!

BOOKS AS DÉCOR

As an Interior designer, I Love bringing books into a space. It’s not just about the gorgeous aesthetic they bring, but for the stories inside. Visiting a home with books tells me something about the people that live there, they are an insight into personality, culture and values. Whether stacked on coffee tables, neatly arranged on shelves, or strategically placed as accents, books can add warmth, texture, and a sense of personal charm to a room.
Their varied sizes, colors, and covers provide an opportunity to infuse the space with personality and style. Moreover, they invite curiosity and conversation, making them more than just decorative items—they become invitations to explore and engage within the designed environment.
